Hey how good is today? ROUND 5, nope Mother’s Day. I chatted to all the kids in Northcote Cougars Under 9s BLUE and on behalf of all the kids my wording of what they each wanted to say to their Mum is this; “I love how we don’t have to say OUT LOUD that I am your favourite kid” To that end I hereby advise Mums that your boys WILL remember it was YOU that wiped their bottom (when they and their Dads would not) and thus the reason you are each-others favourite, and that your boys will aim to one day promote you to the status of GRANDMOTHER! Here is the boy’s special gift to all Mums,..........free to you,...that right, FREE TO YOU! To collect your FREE Saeco coffee machine valued at $1500, just go to your partner’s wallet, take out their credit card and head on down to David Jones. Throw out the receipt, replace the credit card and blame the boy. Remember it’s your day, if Mum’s happy,.........everyone’s happy! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY. Now back to the footy. What a cracker of a day, with the sun shining on the north east facing oval of the West Preston Roosters (Thanks Craig) the first thing we all said is.................this is a mighty big oval! How big? Well some of the parents couldn’t see the other side with their aged eyes, but everyone could see our Captains for the day Banger Harvey and Everything’s Archie won the toss and kicked with the wind. The umpire goes bang, ball is bounced and no sooner was it hammering out toward the wind Nick put in 4 efforts in a row to tie the ball up, I was yelling, Dad John was yelling, Coach Mick was yelling and Nick was spent. Not too long after little Xavier was being hound by 3 West Preston Roosters, again I am yelling instruction and to the letter young Xavier obliges, but he is not done, he beats them all, picks up the ball, turns goal-ward and pops a kick out to hit Otto. Wowwee! Now Otto, mate, have you played a better Qtr? He was everywhere playing the defensive forward, marking, kicking, scrounging and getting lots of action. Now listen up Craig (Northcote Medic for the day) your boy Harry has awoken and did he love it or what? Marking, kicking, chasing, throw in a Ruck tap, throw is a spoil by actually punching the ball away, I’ve said it before harry we are going to take advantage of your height so start practising your jumping for the Ruck buddy, the opposition is going to look and think they have a challenge. But there is still more to be said for the first Qtr, calling Spencer, he has got some go and was in the thick of things with Xavier and Nick just continuing to press forward. In the second Qtr my favourite play was Harvey linking with Tom, Cody and Reuben to get the ball from half back to FF where Harvey kicked inboard to Jon Le for one of his 2 goals for the day. Whilst the coaching staff were yelling for it to happen what was a pleasure to watch is the kids did it without thinking a-la John Kennedy “Don’t think,....Do”. Now Cody, is this boy lightening? He was stuck in the midst of 4 Roosters and he snatched the ball out of their hands, stormed passed their outstretched hands and had the presence of mind to arch his back so they could not grab his jumper and kicked a banana into the forward line. Now Maxy “Knackers” games are just getting better, he is doing the in an under better and better and if you look closely you will see Colin smiling, but he needs to be careful because last time his face stayed like that when the wind blew so he quickly resumed the poker face. Can you say Harvey Wallbanger? 3 goals, marking forward, hands in front of the face, can kick, can play, he is having a purple patch, he is taking Brownlow votes from his team mate Tom J. Sully, Sully, Sully, Sully, Sully SSSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUULLLLLEEEEYYYYYYYY, YOU BEAUTY, he went up, the crowd went up, I think I heard people with dyslexia shout out TISH! I know I did, his Dad did, the Rooster Coach did, the players did as Sully pulled in an absolute screamer! I actually did run over and give the boy a wrap on the shoulders and he was grinning from ear to ear. Beaming whilst readying for his kick he asked “Did you see that”, yes I screamed back, MARK OF THE YEAR! What a ripper! Now kids go to Mr Google and put in Alex Jesaulenko and this is what comes up youtube/watch?v=l7xKasdlZlk and guess what? I was there for Jezza’s and I was there for Sully’s. Did anyone see Coach Mick running around the boundary with his jumper pulled over his head and arms in the air screaming that’s my boy? Well maybe not but he did it on the inside. Now Big Ben and Che, both boys played great games and both boys showed great leadership. Benny went down with an ankle after a solid contribution yet again and put up the hand to take himself off, Che too, whilst he saw out the game, he had the presence of mind to take himself off at one point to grab the inhaler. Take note team, when in doubt, sit out if it is to do with your health if not feeling 100%. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AND NOT NEGOTIABLE, because we can’t have a team without YOU! Other snippets of leadership were seen on field and overall game from Leo, Reuben and Max-1-million (get it?), Leo and Reubs were backing up and filling the wall to back up their mates, there is no “I” in team and so without them no team. Max-1-million was again smart enough to acknowledge he had to run off to get his mouth guard. This is really assertive behaviour as it shows he is thinking so he can be ready for the game and again he was getting busy. As Coach Mick has indicated I better not forget my boy PJ who has been working hard on his game. So if you can smell a little crispy smell coming from the exhaust tailpipe,...well,.... that’s a little, Shake.....N,.....Bake, Shake’n’bake! PJ runs, runs and runs when the opposition stops he runs more, like Joel Selwood or Andrew Carrazzo, his gut running is on! Parker’s attack on the ball and repeat efforts is the big one for him and many times I see him getting up from the bottom of a pack. Averaging 5 tackles a game for the first 5 rounds, he is really backing up his team mates in leading by example. I love how he is also learning to read the play and getting free plus listening to the wider Coaching Group, including me J so that he can improve his game. He loves it and I know his buddies love it too because we are all looking out to help each-other. I also think he too is secretly racking up votes but don’t tell as I want to get a bet on with Tom Waterhouse and John Singleton, Andrew Johns, owners of the house of ill repute and anyone else that will take my money. Well done on an excellent complete team effort Under 9s BLUE.
