Hey worship leaders- I have a poll/question for you all. How - TopicsExpress

Hey worship leaders- I have a poll/question for you all. How many of you guys use hand signals to give cues/directions to your team as you lead live? I am wondering because I use a TON of hand signals when I lead on Sundays but the other worship leaders in my church dont. I came from a house of prayer context where we led a lot of prophetic/spontaneous/spirit-led worship (a la Bethel/Jesus Culture/IHOP) where the cues werent always rehearsed and the flow of worship would frequently change and the musicians/singers would then have to adapt quickly. For the last year and a half I have been leading worship for one of the services at my small home church. Im in my early 20s and all the musicians/singers on my team are younger than I am. Everything is rehearsed beforehand and my leadership doesnt like surprises in a live setting (spontaneous choruses or added songs). Anyway, I still find that I am very used to using my hands to communicate changes in dynamics, repeats of choruses, etc. I was just curious how you guys felt about using your hands to give cues? (I play acoustic rhythm and sing btw) Does it look unprofessional/unrehearsed? A lot of times my band doesnt need cues anymore, but I am very used to giving them and Im not sure if I can stop.. Also, if you do happen to use hand signals- what do you guys use? I use an index finger twirl/wrap it up signal to denote a repeat for the chorus or verse The ones I use the most are patting the air down to have the band quiet down/fade out Ill point an index finger up to my drummer if I want a hard build in a bridge Closed fist means to cut out Ive seen Jenn Johnson hold up a certain number of fingers to denote which verse of the song they were going to The most useful Ive definitely seen is holding up a number of fingers if using the nashville number system to introduce a new progression (my team is still learning the number system though) What Ive been really having trouble communicating to my drummer especially is when the tempo is too slow or too fast. Anyone know a good signal to communicate this?
