Hi Everyone! There has been a lot of controversy this evening - TopicsExpress

Hi Everyone! There has been a lot of controversy this evening regarding the sale of ASB’s Pink Out T-shirts for our home game this Friday, and I’d like to respond. In this statement, I will clarify some points that seem to have gotten lost or incorrectly interpreted throughout the night, as well as address some suggestions made by our peers and discuss our plans moving forward. First off, Id like to solidify a fact that many may be unaware of. Because of Ed Code, ASB cannot legally donate ANY money raised from any of our fundraisers toward a cause or charity. It is against state law. We are legally restricted. When this t-shirt idea was first proposed, donating proceeds was our plan until we realized it was illegal. There was never any sort of malicious, exploitative, unethical profit-making game plan brewing in the ASB classroom. Secondly, I would like point out that in all forms of sale and advertisement, ASB has never pursued any sort of deceptive, untruthful marketing tactic. There seems to have developed the incorrect idea that ASB has neglected to state where the funded money would go. In reality, we have explicitly posted this information, with no intentions of “tricking” anyone about anything. Moving on, ASB members have indeed discussed our peers’ concerns regarding where the proceeds will go. The petition is a wonderful example of activism and awareness, but the majority of the suggestions it provides are unfortunately, simply not legal. While we cannot pursue actions that violate the law, as mentioned above, we will certainly discuss and take into consideration the suggestions that are viable and LEGAL. :) We thank you, our peers, for taking the time and energy to vocalize your concerns and to point out flaws we had not previously considered during our decision-making process. Your complaints have not gone unheard. Please feel free to contact me with any clarification questions, concerns, and suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you! Claire, ASB President
