Hi Friends, I apologize for being mostly offline (little email, phone and facebook) in the last few weeks. I will be catching up on replying to messages this weekend. I was very focused on documenting the Belhaven hospital which has a deliciously happy ending at this point: The hospital is saved and the community came together in effective civic engagement; and, NAACP and conservatives worked together to achieve this end. Some of the conservatives are calling for Medicaid expansion and more federal help in providing healthcare. What more could I want in a story?! I was also focused on getting this family of dogs adopted -- seven puppies, mama and daddy. We came across them near Belhaven when we almost ran over the puppies rolling around on Hwy 264. Except for mama, theyve all been placed into great homes in eastern NC and central VA. I still have mama and she is so sweet and affectionate, I may adopt her. Im still looking for the perfect situation for her. She deserves a great home; a family farm with a dog or two would be nice. While I was running around looking for good homes for the dogs, I came across a horse farm in central VA that I would describe as doggie paradise. Let me just say, if I were a dog, Id want to live there. The owner of the farmer, a lovely and intriguing woman, ended up adopting not only daddy dog, but also Sagada, the beautiful lab-chow dog that I adopted over the summer in Durham from a friend. As soon as we got to the farm, Sagada indicated to me that he wanted to stay there. I released him with love and joy. Hed found his forever home. I still have Dudley with me -- still waiting for that sign that it is time. Hes still eating quite a bit and walking around (slowly). He does have his coughing fits though and occasional incontinence. He sleeps most of the time. So, I can say I was very focused on my rescue and care missions. I was also spending a lot of time cleaning up poop and pee instead of doing my usual thing. Right now, Im quite exhausted. Im resting at home in Silver Spring. Were back to NC on Monday. Love, Annabel
