Hi, Im Michelle and Im a ring snob. ;) So, had a few people ask me today why I dont like enameled copper, and I know this conversation has been had before; however, not only am I a ring snob, Im a pack-rat (sounds better than ring hoarder...)! So after digging through a pile of stuff and traveling down chainmaille memory lane, I present you photographic evidence of why this material, while shiny and pretty, is better left for wire wrapping and not chainmailling (and heck, if you disagree with me, cool, PM me, I found thousands of these suckers that we used to cut that Ill sell). All samples are about 3-5 years old (and most back when enameled copper was high quality too!! scary...) 1. This bracelet only saw a few wears before rings started to warp out of place. And that filmy looking substance on the silver rings? Not dust; its peeling and flaking enamel. 2. These were beautiful at one time... listed as anti-tarnish wire too, they were all once the same shade of silver. 3. Remember that peeling and flaking enamel? Its sticky. Gross sticky. 4. Some colours are worse than others. Hardly put any pressure on the three rings (okay, one half ring) on the right, you can simply pluck the enamel off... like cheap nail polish that comes off with a single scrape (and still keeps its shape...). The one on the left, untouched, but you can see the extra bit of enamel already hanging off by the cut. 5. Wish I could find a sample, but it probably got chucked years ago, when you coil the stuff, you get colour bands, alternating dark and light colours of the same shade. Now, with the quality of some (being nice here...) brands decreasing, you get bands and streaks (places with no enamel).
