Hi Peeps: After travelling most of the day yesterday, I am now in Erice, Sicily attending an international conference at the renowned Ettore Majorana Foundation Centre for Scientific Culture. The 4-day conference, entitled What Makes us Human? Biological and Cultural Evolution of Homo sapiens, was co-organized by Stefano Parmigiani, Telmo Pievani and Ian Tattersall. EMFCSC, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is composed of four restored monasteries housing the lecture hall and accommodation for participants. I am very pleased to note that my keynote lecture The Evolution of Human Reproduction: Inference in the Absence of a Fossil Record was first on the agenda and is now safely behind me. One of the strengths of the programmes here is that pre-university students are encouraged to attend, and they have raised some of the most astute and interesting questions after the initial presentations.
