Hi all, My name is Tim and thought I would drop you all a line - TopicsExpress

Hi all, My name is Tim and thought I would drop you all a line from Australia. This weekend I will have the honour to be returning to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea with my Grandfather who is 92 years of age. He served with the 2/33rd AIF in WW2 and spent a lot of his time in New Guinea. The reason for his return is 71 years to the day ( this Sunday ) was the worst aviation disaster involving Australian soldiers in WW2. A USAAF B24-D Liberator (42-40682) Pride of the Cornhuskers flown by the 5th Airforce 43BG crashed after taking off from Jacksons airstrip on the 7th September 1943. As my grandfather recalls, the Liberator looked like it was never going to make it off the ground. It clipped trees on its accent but came crashing down to earth violently into the path of the convoy of Australias 2/33rd AIF soldiers who were on there way to awaiting DC3 Dakotas to be flow out to Lae. 62 Australians would loose there lives including the 11 USAAF men aboard the Pride of the Cornhuskers Liberator. A further 90 men had horrific injuries. We are returning to the crash site to pay tribute to all those men who paid the ultimate sacrifice, that early morning 71 years ago. We will be reading out all their names and also laying a poppy on each of the graves of these brave men. Im so lucky to be sharing this experience with my father and my Pop. It will be something I will remember for the rest of my life. Lest We Forget. If their is anyone on this forum that has any information on the incident mentioned I would love to hear about it. Kind regards, Tim
