Hi friends, Amnesty International (AI) has expressed concern about Australias treatment of asylum-seekers from Sri Lanka who arrived by boat, reminding us of what happened in Canada a few years ago. We copy below the Urgent Action issued by AI yesterday, which emphasizes the basic rights guaranteed in international law about persons rights around the world to make refugee claims, and in this case, being denied by Australia. We note as well, that we merely cite the address of the Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa, since media reports indicate that the Canadian Government has not recognized the person who the Sri Lankan Government named as the successor to Mrs. Wagiswara, the most recent Sri Lankan High Commissioner, who has taken on a senior advisory position in Sri Lankas Ministry of External Affairs at home.
