Hi friends, When I left newspapers to be a freelance writer about a year ago, I thought it would be liberating. I thought I would finally tell all the stories. All of them, anywhere in the world. With unlimited time to work on them. And also write a book, or three. Of course, thats not the way it works, which has been deeply frustrating to me. Living is expensive, and so is reporting. Often, I was forced to choose unrewarding projects that paid rent, forgoing research on a pitch that might not. Im not alone. The pressures of the industry are preventing great journalists from chasing important, inspiring stories. So Ive been busy working on what I hope is the solution, a magazine called Latterly, which, if all goes well, will have its first issue in November. The platform isnt new. Its a no-frills medium (like Medium), stripped down to the essentials — words, pictures and videos — and just four stories each month. Im hoping theyll be just compelling enough to convince a few people to chuck in $3 a month for the cause of well-told journalism. You can learn more about it here: latterlymagazine And, Im accepting pitches. So if you have something laying around, please do let me know! Thanks for reading, Ben
