Hi to this group. I enjoy the knowledge that is shared on this page. Of course Uncle Albert is my favorite, then Bohr, Feynman and then Dyson. I never really paid attention until I had read Project Orion. It was done in San Diego, CA in the mid 50s - 63. Conceived in La Jolla under the guise of General Atomics (they make the predator drone now); I was born at Scripts Hospital in 53 and spent a lot of time body surfing at La Jolla and exploring tidal caves when visible. The book is written by Freeman Dysons son George. I probably played in the surf with George as a child. The proof of concept was done in Point Loma, I lived in Point Loma my last few years in San Diego and surely wasnt more than a mile or two from where using nukes for something useful the concept of sending large vehicles about the size of the Super Dome into Space at up to 1/10th the speed of light. My father was a GE man and did a lot of work with Convair and new players at General Atomics. The world kept getting smaller. Freeman Dyson and Richard Feynman took a trip out west to Richards new position as a professor. I can only imagine a road trip with Richard Feynman, Kerouac move over, the bongo player on that ride is a hero of mine. It appears that after Freeman got back he wrote books on how to use the still poorly understood quantum physics and in Dysons book Eros to Gaia he sets down much of what I believe in and Lee Smolin does an outstanding job of dissing group thought and large budget projects being a catch all for crap. As we now see with our ISS we are in deep doo doo because our only way up to the station at this time is through the iffy Russia and Putin has stated, no more US hitch hikers after 2020. Speaking of Lee Smolin, he may be my favorite current scientist except he gets up to the point of a grand thought (Life in the Cosmos, which is on par with Benoit Mandelbrot and his concept of fractal geometry which may describe the different force relationships as well as Einstein described the geometry of Space/Time) and then backs off. Yes Lee, speaking to you, I love the way you think, but I still dont by absolute time. Time will tell and sadly Benoit passed last year regarding his concepts but if you keep in mind logarithmic thinking expressed as geometry then maybe Benoit tied Relativity to Quantum and didnt even know it. Currently I have my nose deep into GEB and Fractals when not reading history or painting. Also since Homeland Security has a list of all I read,(the librarian informed me of this procedure when I asked to keep a list of what I read) I am also reading The Age of Radiance: The Epic Rise and Dramatic Fall of the Atomic Era which leaves only a few numbers missing to achieve fizzle. Ahhhh, and to think, I had high clearance at one time. My goal is to keep them guessing in my old age. I wonder how they took the reading of one of the versions of the Koran. Just never read it and now I realize it is worse than the Christian Bible in the way it is organized. No wonder Religion still scares me. Anyway enough for now. I love Lee Smolin, want Pluto back; Neil it has 5 moons and one is close in scale to the one we have in size percentage. He has made me goofy, yet I love the Hayden and especially love the Museum of Natural History. Lee Smolins Three Roads to Loop Quantum Gravity was a masterpiece and his Trouble with Physics and his book Life in the Cosmos should be a good way to introduce young people to good science and why it looks as goofy as taking Pluto away from us. Nice to be part of a group that I would be a member of. William Shubert are you here yet? Yeah, I write too much. I am getting old, have all this attained information in my grey matter and need to share. Glad there is a place that I can share and go crazy. Thanks Jolene Creighton, I gave up twinkies years ago when I found out they out live hot dogs. :)
