Hill carol team enchants Kolkata DARJEELING, 7 Dec 2014: The Divine day of Christmas is still a few days away, but the traditional festivity has already begun in Kolkata. People have transformed this anxious wait for the day, into celebration. Christmas carol already started from Saturday and, in keeping with the tune, different carol singing team of the hills are visiting the city of joy. Boys and girls from Sikkim and Darjeeling (including Kalimpong and Kurseong), part of the Calcutta Hill Christian Church, presented a delectable repertoire of Christmas carols at the historic St. Andrew’s Church of Kolkata. Their programme for the evening was entitled Carol from the Hills — a 9 Lesson & 9 Carol Service. Keeping in mind of the rampant racism and violence that prevails in every part of the country, the young singers from the hills sung hymns both in Nepali and English, giving out a wonderful message of peace, love and humanity. The service began with a processional hymn ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ followed by many other gospel songs with voices of the choir resonating through the dome of St. Andrew’s. The fascinating part of the evening was a special presentation by the CHCC elders— an adaptation of a Nepali folk song for the occasion of Christmas, a song that immediately transported one back to the splendour of Darjeeling hills. Also brilliant was the Nepali rendition of ‘Silent Night’ (Dhanya Raat) by the choir. The program ended with a benediction by Rev. Mashi followed by the choir joyously bursting into ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. HS
