Hip-hop and comedy are similar in that a lot of stealing goes on. As a teacher, I can crack down on plagiarism by giving students zeroes on papers, but in the arts, the line and its associated consequences becomes a lot more murky. To me, the true genius of a joke or lyric is in its creation. Hip-hop has schemes, comedy has bits, hip-hop has punchlines, comedy has the same. I understand being inspired by others, but to simply regurgitate someone elses idea and then attempt to repackage it as your own doesnt make you talented, it makes you a hack. The sad part about it is a lot of people attain career longevity by stealing from those on their way up, and the majority of the public is too oblivious or naive to notice. In hip-hop, the list is too long, and I wouldnt know where to begin...Some ridiculously famous comedians known for stealing jokes excessively are Robin Williams, Dane Cook, and Dennis Leary. Thankfully, every now and then, someones career is completely ruined over this kind of a thing, and this video is the best example I can find of someone getting their shit pushed in for being a thief.
