Historian Greg Grandin, author of the widely hailed book The Empire of Necessity, ends 2014 with a memory piece on the forgotten American invasion of Panama that launched it all 25 years ago. As he writes, “You can’t begin to fully grasp the slippery slope of American militarism in the post-9/11 era -- how unilateral, preemptory ‘regime change’ became an acceptable foreign policy option, how ‘democracy promotion’ became a staple of defense strategy, and how war became a branded public spectacle -- without understanding Panama.” It’s a classic of a piece and a powerful reminder of the forces of war Washington has let loose in the last quarter of a century. Tom From TomDispatch this evening: The origins of Washington’s world of permanent, unilateral war in an invasion that’s largely been forgotten a quarter-century later -- Greg Grandin, “The War to Start All Wars, The 25th Anniversary of the Forgotten Invasion of Panama” tomdispatch/blog/175937/
