History wednesday! :) The Thompson submachine gun (nicknamed the Thompson or Tommy Gun) is an American submachine gun, invented by John T. Thompson in 1918, that became infamous during the Prohibition era. The Thompson was favored by soldiers, criminals, police and civilians alike for its ergonomics, compactness, large .45 ACP cartridge, reliability, and high volume of automatic fire. The weapon was in service for the U.S. military from 1938 to 1971, but was originally made for use in World War I. However, the design was not finished in time. There was two military version made. The M1928A1 had provisions for box and drum magazines, while the M1/M1A1 (the most common one) had a simplified design only for box magazines.
