Hmmm. Perhaps establishing a facebook group for my upcoming Jazz Appreciation course might be the way to go. That all of this is happening on Facebook—as opposed to, say, the university’s course-management system—is a key point for Mr. Dougherty. “This is where students are spending their time already,” he says. “Let’s make use of it.” On the other hand, I will likely continue my no electronic devices policy during our regular class meeting times. Too many opportunities for distraction, and allowing computer/smartphone use during class has, in the past, proven less-than-manageable at best. What do students, teachers, and administrators think?
