Holiday Fire Safety Tip #10: Chimney fires are extremely common at this time of year. Neglected chimneys accumulate creosote, which gathers on the walls of the chimney and can ultimately catch fire. Here are a few important safety reminders in order to prevent chimney fires: 1. Keep the area in front of the fireplace clear of paper, and debris. 2. If your fireplace does not have a glass door, use a wire mesh screen. 3. Use seasoned hardwoods that have been split for 6 months to a year. Green wood creates more creosote. Wrapping paper, boxes, and trash should not be burned in the fireplace. These things too can lead to creosote build-up. 4. Install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly. Replace the batteries each season, and if the detector is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced. As always, if you have any questions, or if you are in need of smoke detectors/information feel free to contact your local fire department. https://youtube/watch?v=maWHWvXU_Os
