Home Depot Penny Shopping Guide and Information Please read through all the information in the files regarding Home Depot (referred to as HD) Penny Shopping. Guidelines: 1. !!!!! First and foremost, please understand that HD penny shopping is very different and more complex than Dollar General (DG) penny shopping and is VERY much YMMV (your mileage may vary—which means what someone else finds for a penny in one store may or may not be the same for you in your store/area.) 2. HD has NO policy regarding the sale of penny items. Some stores will let you purchase penny items and others will refuse to sell penny items. Numerous people have been told by corporate that penny items are NOT supposed to be sold. 3. HD clearance sales are NOT system wide. (meaning some stores have items on clearance while other stores do not. Some stores have items that pennied out while other stores still have not pennied them out or may not even have them on clearance.) 4. HD penny items are found in the clearance sections (each department has its own clearance section) as well as in with regular items throughout the store. 5. Do NOT ask employees for a price scan! You may very well lose out on your item if they price scan it and it shows as a penny item. 6. As a general rule, your best bet for scoring penny items and actually being able to purchase them and leave the store with them is to use the self checkout. Some employees and managers will sell penny items at the registers, but it’s more likely that they will pull the item and refuse to sell it to you if they see it’s a penny. 7. If a store refuses to sell you a penny item, DO NOT call corporate and complain. The more attention and harassment corporate gets over penny items, the more likely it is that they will stop the practice of “penny-ing out” items altogether. L 8. It may sound crazy, but with HD you REALLY have to try to fly under the radar to score penny items! Don’t ask for price scans, go to self checkouts when possible (and hope the attendant is busy elsewhere or doesn’t insist on helping you checkout), price scan your items and if it’s a penny scan it to checkout and checkout quickly and get it out of the store and into your vehicle as quickly as possible. Some stores are happy to let customers have penny items while others are not and will refuse to sell penny items. Because there is NO corp. policy on the penny items, it’s much more difficult to penny shop at HD. How to Penny Shop at HD: Penny items are most likely found in the clearance sections located on end caps. They are located through-out the store in various locations. Each department has their own clearance section. They can be found in the middle of the store, near the garden center, and in the very back of the store. Penny items can be found mixed in with regular items as well. Look for items without a price tag on the shelf or items that have a yellow clearance sticker on them. Here is an example yellow clearance sticker: If price ends in .06 = 50% off original price If price ends in .03 = 75% off original price The BOD on this sticker is 10/10/13. Sometimes the BOD is printed just above the barcode on the right. The .06 and .03 indicate how many weeks until the item becomes a penny (6 weeks and 3 weeks). This is based upon the date on the yellow home depot price tag. Any items clearanced with a Born on Date (BOD) of 10/30/13 or before should be a penny as Home Depot typically pennies items out around 8 to 12 months (YMMV). It takes a minimum of 250 days (8 months & 1 week) after the BOD for the item to go to a penny. This is Home Depots general price reduction format. Keep in mind that every Home depot may be different as to what is being clearance out based on region. In the grand scheme of things seasonal items maybe clearance out faster then not so seasonal items. Another rule of thumb to note that is very helpful in determining if something might possibly be a penny is look at the before and after price on the yellow tag. I saw something that was normally $25.00 and the yellow sticker said it was on sale for $4.23. That is a big discount so I took the item to check it and sure enough it was a penny. So if you see something that is a huge price difference its definitely worth checking on. I find it easier to have eyes peeled on price differences on the yellow tag. Sometimes you will find something on the clearance end-cap shelf that will have no tag or miscellaneous markings and or dusty. This is another indication that it is old or possibly penny out. Home Depot self checkouts have a price check option on them. Always double check the item if you are unsure. Once checking out be sure to mute the sound on the register as some read the price aloud. It’s best to scan and pay for your item as quickly as possible so have change ready when you are scanning your item so you can get your receipt printed quickly. HD is much more likely to let you go ahead and have a penny item if you have already purchased it and have receipt in hand. That being said, however, there are instances where HD has taken an item away from customers—even after it was paid for and refused to let them leave the store with the item. In at least one of those instances, police were called and they stated it was a civil matter and told the customer to leave the item (a Dyson vaccuum) in the management office of the store until management/corporate figured out what to do. This is why it’s important to understand that HD is very different about penny shopping. Be sure to scan the original barcode and not the yellow tag if possible. It has been reported by several people that scanning a yellow tag at self checkout will automatically alert the attendant cashier if the item does actually ring up at a penny. This often leads to the store’s refusal to sell the penny items. Note that not all stores are on the same schedule for penny items but tend to be close. As with DG Penny Shopping, it’s best to find a buddy---someone you can text or message questions to who might be able to help you out. That’s about the gist of it. If it isn’t answered here—we probably don’t know the answer! But if you have information that hasn’t been included here, please feel free to include it to help others out! Thanks!
