Home detective story. 11:30 PM - Very faint hissing sound in bathroom. Thermometer: 20 degrees. Ear against wall and pipes, cant hear it. Put head near skylight, can only hear outside noise. Seems to be present everywhere in the bathroom (mostly tile). Go downstairs, cant hear it. Poke ceiling looking for soft spots, none. Ear against pipes, no sound. shut off water to upstairs tub (it sometime will freeze so there is a shut off downstairs), sound is still there. Go outside (cold) look around house, make sure outside valves off and covered, nothing. Decide that there is no imminent threat of flood to our newly carpeted basement, so went to bed. Next day, shut off house water in the street. Sound is still there. Guess it isnt a water problem. Craw into the attic go to that end of the house, nothing weird. Give up. Decide that it is some weird physics thing where the vent and/or exhaust pipe has some resonant modulation or filtering of the outside noise. Resign ourselves to the presence of a weird noise. : : :a few days : : Deb is doing her thing in the bathroom. Can still hear the sound. Notices it slightly louder near the bottom of the shelf. Looks and finds the battery powered am/fm radio is on AM but off station with the volume down. The faint hiss is the stupid radio.........I will sleep better tonight.
