Homily for Memorial of St. Theodore of Studis, 11/12/13 For St. Theodore of Studis, defender of icons against those who thought them odolatrous and wished to ban them from Christian devotion, for Theodore the error of those who thought they could approach God through the mind alone was blatant, all but self-evident. If merely mental contemplation had been sufficient, he wrote, it would have been enough for him to come to us in a merely mental way. But that is not what God did, neither in the beginning when He walked in the Garden with Adam His friend, nor at the end of the ages when He took flesh and lived among us as One who could be heard, seen, touched. Spiritual knowledge does not founder upon, but begins with, that in which our eyes can delight, that which our lips can kiss. An icon, a statue, and yes, even one of us nameless grape-pickers, useless servants who do no more than our duty, if that, any of these can be a beacon of testimony to Gods sanctification of creation through the flesh of His Son.
