Hong Kongs government is receiving final public ideas for how the territory should elect its next leader, a post which will be filled by universal suffrage for the first time. Pro-democracy activists such as Anson Chen and Martin Lee fear the government will screen out any candidates who criticize the policies of Chinas central government in Beijing. But the activists have faced criticism at home from pro-establishment politicians, including former Hong Kong security chief Regina Ip. In an interview with VOA’s Michael Lipin, Ip gives her reaction to Chan and Lee’s recent mission to lobby U.S. officials to support their cause.
