Honored to be a finalist for a Folio Award for a Cosmopolitan story I did about guns on campus. Hats off to my editor Sara Austin, who suggested the topic. I revisited the scene of a tragic shooting at Northern Illinois University and talked to survivors about their lives in the years that followed. One, Maria Ruiz-Santana, is now a campus police officer at the same school. She patrols the campus with dozens of bullets still buried beneath her skin.
