Hope everyone is having a great Saturday! Ch. 6 pg 27 My turn was coming up. I was the 3rd kid in line now, then the 2nd. By the time I entered the doorway of the class, I totally forgot about my mom and Teresa standing there. There was a really nice looking lady sitting at a table next to the door and she asked me my name. “Maria Elena,” I said. She picked my name tag off the table. It was a laminated card with holes punched at the ends and had a yarn tied through them, and it went around your neck. She then told me to go pick a spot on the carpet, and that we’d start class as soon as everyone was sitting down. Most of the kids were already sitting down, and I went and sat down along with the other bewildered children. Everyone looked around at each other. Some kids made conversation with their neighbors, while most sat silent, feeling uncomfortable around so many strange faces. When all the kids were finally seated, our teacher came over and introduced herself. She was a very kind looking woman, probably in her mid 40s. She wasn’t too tall, about 5 foot, and she had short, sandy blond hair. And the one thing I’ll always remember about her is her perfume. She wore the perfume Ciara, and to this day, when I get a scent of it, I think of her. She was a very nice teacher, and my first day of school went really good. Her aid’s name was Alicia, and all the kids loved her too! She must’ve been in her early 20s, and she was really quite pretty. She was like everyone’s big cousin. And Teresa was right. I did have fun. And our very first activity that day was coloring a picture of the Mexican flag. I guess the school was predominately Hispanic! At recess I painted my first picture of a house, and hung it up on the fence to dry, just as I had seen the other kids before me. I was so proud that day to show my mom what I had done on my first day of kindergarten! I even ran over to my grandma’s to show her my painting, and my colored Mexican flag. Only later did I find my Uncle Hugo drew pictures of planets or something spacey on the back of it. I was so mad!
