Hot Water The day was sunny. I can see the suns rays coming - TopicsExpress

Hot Water The day was sunny. I can see the suns rays coming through the front door in the living room. It was probably around four oclock, the tv going this time of day was the usual thing. Mom caught a few glimpses of Days of Our Lives, and the Doctors. Then we would watch Scoop and Snoop, who played some old western or the Three Stooges. Not much choice in the tv programming back then. We only received two channels we could never get CBS. Dad had tried a few of his tricks with cable and an antennae up on the hill but most of the time the antennae was on top of the house, so we got used to sizzle and friing noise and rolling pictures. Now that would dry me crazy! I can not remember on this particular day if it was summer or during the school day but every day Mom had to heat a partial tub of water for Dads bath and keep it on the stove until he came home around four. Anything else had to be started too, like supper so she was one busy lady. This particular day Dad was home and still black from the mines having removed his sox, shirt etc. except the bottoms and so they sat the tub down in the kitchen floor beside the cook stove. Mom had a couple buckets of cold water handy to put in to cool it to bath temperature and grabbed for one. The doorway from the livingroom with attached curtains just a couple feet away. Just as she turned around with the bucket to pour it in my little sister Debbie had backed up and fell right into that scalding water sitting down into it. Mom probably screamed I guess and they got her out fast as they could. Her hands were scalded and her buttocks and around and down on her little legs. I remember big giant blisters covering her in that area. They rushed her to the Dr. and he gave them Unguentine (wrong spelling) she was told to keep it clean and covered. Since Debbie usually slept in the bed with us Mom put her in the crib and she had to lay on her stomach all the time. We were all really scared for our sister that day. I can remember Mom charring cloth to make sure the germs were gone before she dressed the burn. Well it worked, I think Debbie was scar less and I know the thought of Mom and Dad sitting that hot water down probably always brought a thought of it to them after that.
