How China is seeking to curb jaywalking #Jaywalking: at best, it’s a nuisance; at worst, a potential hazard that could lead to deadly consequences. With that in mind, cities across #China seem to be innovating to ensure that pedestrians are reminded of their responsibilities. In some towns, foldable barriers, usually seen at gates of residential complexes or factories, have been installed at #crossings to prevent people from jumping the light. At other places, automated announcement systems have been installed, warning #pedestrians and informing them when they can cross. The efforts of the traffic authorities have been lauded on social media in the country, although many feel that they do come with certain drawbacks. “It’s a good method. But it will mean that the time allotted for vehicles to cross will reduce”, argued a Sina Weibo user named @Sanqingguandian. “I think it’s a method which can only help manage pedestrians’ behavior in short term”, wrote another Sina Weibo user named @Anboanbo.
