How Kristen Stewart Will Be Left Out of Her Own Sequel » Before Snow White and the Huntsman even opened and made a genuinely baffling amount of money, there was talk among Universal executives about making a sequel to the film that focused exclusively on Chris Hemsworth’s character. The events that have happened since then—Kristen Stewart’s affair with the film’s director and Hemsworth’s uptick in stardom since the Thor sequel— might be tempting to credit for news that the Huntsman spinoff is still happening. But just so we’re clear: this was in the works two years ago. That’s just how long it takes these things to happen when “will this make a ton more money?” is literally the only concern. Not that a Huntsman movie couldn’t be great! Particularly with word that The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead director Frank Darabont may direct, and that Charlize Theron’s wicked-queen character (last seen trapped inside her own magic mirror) could somehow return as well. Stewart, on the other hand, will be M.I.A. The Wrap reports that her character will either appear in cameos or not at all, allowing the story to focus entirely on Hemsworth’s character. So while the movie is in some ways a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, the first character’s name— arguably the only famous character’s name— will be out of the picture. Princesses and fairy tales may still be hot these days, but Snow White, for the moment, is being retired. With Hemsworth still part of the Marvel cinematic universe (The Avengers 2 arrives next year), it’s fair to ask just how many franchises a single actor can headline. But we could have said the same for Stewart, who likely wouldn’t have been eager anyway to jump into another series of movies in which she’s a dark-haired, moody beauty caught up in a battle bigger than she is. Stewart’s career future is more likely in provocative indies or auteurist collaborations, not a sequel in which she continues to look uncomfortable as a princess. Let Hemsworth return to the woods and pick up his axe again— he was great at it the first time.
