How The Official Propaganda Machine Has Stifled Our Thinking Posted in: Opinion By Joshua Kembero Ogega Lately I have been looking at how the Kenyan state operates and I must admit that its main strategists must be good students of Nicolo Machiavelli, George Orwell and Karl Marx. As much as we tend to pretend whenever this is brought up, ours is indeed a dystopian society and we are prisoners of our own minds. The Kenyan media has perfected the art of mind conditioning. We are bombarded with low grade programmes on our telescreens, if I may use Orwellian language, at the expense of real programmes that will enrich and free our minds from the cage of ignorance. Why is it that all TV stations are competing against each other to air Mexican telenovelas, reality programmes on relationships, low grade comedy and very biased news just to keep us glued to the screen at the expense of real issues? We rarely discuss the spread of AIDS but we come elated during morning shows as people share their X-rated lifestyles. It is no wonder that Kenya’s Secret History has never come back to our screens after running a single season and promising to come back with an expose on who killed Robert Ouko. We just don’t like watching the ‘boring’ documentaries. In George Orwell’s 1984, Big Brother (I doubt if he ever existed in the novel or if it was a creation of the Eurasian government) keeps the proles glued to propaganda on the telescreens. Children are conditioned to hate on their parents and even report their thought crimes. So widespread is the propaganda that the Eurasian government lies to the proles that there is an existing war with its archrival, Oceania, just to keep them glued to non-issues as they comfortably rule with an iron fist. We see this on the news daily. News about people shagging animals becomes the focal point of our news at the expense of real issues. We rant day and night about people of certain communities and their bestial tendencies forgetting that this is just a piece of the film reeling from the propagandists’ video tapes geared towards keeping us from the main issues. On the other hand, the proles are enticed with poor grade gin called Victory just to help them drown the troubles of their wretched lives. It is the same with us. Promises of free laptops, free maternity services etc. Do you think those things are for free? The whole project reeks of populist agenda that has no place in a free and capitalist society we claim to be. Nicolo Machiavelli was right when he postulated on benevolent despotism. When that doesn’t work, our Sunday TV screens are replete with ‘sermons’ from dubious characters masquerading as men of the cloth when we know their real intentions. They will promise us heaven on earth, miraculous jobs, money etc. just to entice us to drop something into the collection purse. Indeed 1848 is a miracle year and Karl Marx was right when he called religion the opium of the masses. We shun spirituality and any time someone speaks ill of these goons, fingers are pointed and one is painted an atheist. When did God become synonymous with a big house, big car etc.? The last time I checked, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The problem with religion is that it is a man-made construct where people make their rules and manipulate the God-given gifts of life, liberty of the mind and use the manipulated mind to aggrandize their estate while the poor worshipper walks to church with worn out shoes to add a coin to the already full collection purse. That is the Kenyan society and unless we unshackle ourselves from these, we will ever remain remote controlled. Free your minds! (Courtesy of Kenya Today)
