Unless youre a professional, type out your speech into main points and put it on a few index cards. Dont use paper because the guests will groan inside when they see more than one page. Is this an inauguration? 2. Pre-Toast: During cocktail hour, ask the other groomsmen or some friends to cheer for you so that it grabs everyones attention. 3. Never, ever, ever admit youre nervous. Ever. 4. When the MC announces its time for you to do the toast, take out your cards, walk confidently with your champagne glass, shake the MCs hand, grab the mic like youre Dave Chappelle, and wait until its quiet. Its imperative that all eyes and attention are on you and then count to five, maybe even 10, and let it be quiet. (If Korean parents are in the room, this is impossible if dinner started, so if youre at a Korean wedding, make sure that your toast is BEFORE Dinner. Trust me. This comes from my experience with hundreds of weddings. Almost all other ethnic groups are respectful when theres a toast and stay quiet.) 5. Dont grab the Mic close to the top and cup it like youre a rapper. Hold it from the bottom and allow at least an inch of space between your mouth and mic. and speak LOUDLY and Confidently. Dont allow more than 6 inches of space from your mouth and the mic. Too many people allow more than 6 inches of space and speak too softly. This makes wedding DJs turn up the volume on the mixer and then the speaker explodes with feedback and everyone glares at the DJ like theyre the devil. Speak loud and clear and command the room. 6. Dont go off on random tangents or get off track. GO RIGHT INTO THE TOAST. Too many people ruin their toast by saying all this blabber before the toast and youre taking away from your moment. These guests are hungry and theyve been to numerous weddings. No one wants to hear anything extraneous or things like... Man that was a tough act to follow... or Ive been nervous about this speech for weeks... We dont want to hear that. We WANT you to rock it. 7. GO RIGHT INTO IT. Before I praise my friend here that we all love... let me share a few true stories from the past that make him/her a unique individual... or however you want to start. The best toasts 8. Share SHORT stories and HAVE FUN. People are there to party. 8. Everyone wants you to do well. Its not like stand up comedy where some people will heckle you and want you to fail. Weddings are an extremely special day where everyone in the room is invited (well most weddings) because they love the Groom and Bride and want everything to be perfect and special and your toast is a HUGE part of it. 9. A good toast will be remembered by your friend forever and sets the tone for the rest of the evening. A painfully awkward one will be long forgotten. 10. The most important thing is DONT WING IT. A Toast shows love and if you prepare for it, it shows you care. If you wing it, it comes off lame. The more you prepare and visualize yourself rocking it, the better it will be. Hope this helps!
