How apnea causes brain damage If you suspect you may have sleep apnea, don’t delay seeking treatment. Every day you wait is another day this condition can do lasting and even permanent damage inside your body. Apnea is the condition where you stop breathing in your sleep, robbing your vital organs of oxygen. That includes your brain – and new research in Neurology shows how low levels of oxygen in the blood due to sleep disorders such as apnea increase microinfarcts by 400 percent. That’s a form of brain damage that shows up before dementia. If your spouse notices loud snores followed by total silence, you may have sleep apnea. Other warning signs include waking up with a headache and/or a sore throat, and feeling drowsy even after a full night of sleep. In most cases, treatment is simple: lose some weight. Apnea is almost always caused by weight gain, and shedding a few pounds will often ease or even cure it. markstengler
