This amount is available through a diet of food containing folic acid. 2.) For women who have a history of neural tube defects the recommended dose is a higher prescription dose of 4,000 micrograms (4.0mg) beginning one to three months before pregnancy and the first trimester of pregnancy.. This higher dose reduces the risk of having another affected pregnancy from 50 to75 percent.
