How many people are aware Michael Jacksons gave a speech to the Oxford [University] Union? I wasnt. I found listening to it this morning very moving. As a speech, its well structured and delivered with all the timing that you would expect from a world class performer. It surprised me with its humor, insight and great advice. It also provides a context that provides a basis to understand MJs highly unusual lifestyle. I looked for and found the recording of this speech as a result of reading My Friend Michael a book [our son] Sam gave me for Christmas. The book is written by one of the kids that Michael Jackson adopted (not in the legal sense). The two of us went to see the MJ tribute in Las Vegas in 2013. Like most people, I was suspicious and nauseated by the allegations of child abuse that were made of MJ (where theres smoke there must be fire etc.). Based on my read of the first 188 pages of the book and the coverage of the Grand Jury trial en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_of_Michael_Jackson I think MJ was guilty of very unconventional behavior, unwise decisions and an obsessive desire to live the childhood that was denied of him, not the 14 criminal charges that were dismissed by the grand jury. I highly recommend listening to the speech. Its very hard not to consider your own relationships with your parents and children as you do so.
