How many people like Orangutans? They are the largest arboreal mammal on the planet, and they make their home in Sumatra and Borneo! They only give birth once every six to ten years, resulting in a slow reproductive rate. They are listed as one of the top 25 most endangered primates on the planet. In Sumatra, there are less then 6,600 Orangutans in the wild. In Borneo, there are around 45,000. There are significantly less now, then there was in 1990; around 255,000 to be exact! Thats right, there was about 300,000 Orangutans in the wild about 25 years ago! This is because of the Palm Oil Industry, deforestation, and the burning of peat forests. They are very intelligent animals because they create and us their own tools, as well as memorize intricate maps of the rainforest to be able to navigate around to get the the ripe fruit that they eat. Some of you may be wondering what Palm Oil is. It is an edible vegetable oil obtained from the African Oil Palm Tree, which originates from West Africa. The majority of Palm Oil is grown and produced in Sumatra and Borneo, but it is being expanded into Africa and South America. Palm Oil plantations is an agricultural crop, which is NOT apart of the rainforests. We all probably eat and use palm oil everyday because it is in the foods we eat, as well as cosmetics and bath products that we all use. Non-sustainable palm oil means that deforestation is happening to produce palm oil plantations. It also means that animals are harmed when they enter the plantations. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil(RSPO) certifies sustainable palm oil plantations to confirm that they use chemicals safely and responsibly. They make sure that the employees and their family are able to make a decent living, as well as have access to schools and healthcare, as well as several other things.
