But one #student hopes all that could change with the #invention of a new device that aims to ‘snare’ people crossing illegally, by collecting mobile phone information. #Shanghai student He Yuanhong has invented an intelligent #monitoring device that can be installed at crossroads. He said that when a person jaywalks the device will “search” for the persons mobile number and send it directly to law enforcerment. According to the student, the idea came to him after he observed pedestrians at an interchange for over 2 hours. “I found that every 22 seconds there was one person jaywalking,” said He. While this is not the first device invented to monitor jaywalking, He said the low cost of his product, around 300RMB ($50) per item, means that it can be mass-produced. Netizens on Chinese social media sites reacted with mixed views. “This should be promoted right now! There are always people jaywalking, severely affecting the traffic. If they don’t ignore the warnings, they should be seriously punished.
