How to take a pic of blood red moon If youre planning on taking out the camera to photograph the lunar eclipse, Fairfax photographer Wolter Peeters has some tips on how to get the best shots out of the red moon. This advice will be useful if you have your own DSLR and are a fairly competent amateur photographer. You need a good steady tripod and your longest lens possible, says Peeters. You also want to set your camera to manual exposure and make sure youve got your cameras light meter set to spot metering. If youre photographing the moon - all you want is a light reading off the moon itself, rather than metering the whole sky, this will avoid the detail of the moon being blown out For those of you heading out to capture the eclipse, its a good idea to give yourself at least 20 minutes to set up before it starts, says Peeters. You dont want trees in the way, you want a spot thats got plenty of clear sky. When photographing the moon your going to have to think on your feet a bit, says Peeters. As the moon starts to become obscured by the shadow of the earth, your exposure will change so you may need to allow more light to come into the sensor. Shutter speed is also crucial. You dont want to have too long of a shutter speed, ideally over 2/100s of a second. This will make sure you dont to capture the movement of the earth, which will reduce the detail of the moon. ISO and aperture will also need to be adjusted accordingly. Dont be afraid to use an ISO over 800 if needed, on modern cameras grain wont show up until a much higher range.
