How to understand Quran To my experience one of the best ways to understand Quran through translation(s) shall be as under; Take two or more translations of Quran in the language(s) of your fluency (two or more for the reason that in case a translator has shown some weakness at some points, then it will be a rare possibility that the other translator will also be weak similarly at the very same point. Thus the difference, if any, shall alert you to verify from other translations and find a rational one. This will be an easier task as you progress and make a little application of mind. Further, many translations in many languages, in soft form as well as hard copies, free as well as on payment are available). Start reading with concentration (for understanding) in continuation & maintain regularity as far as possible (even if it means as little as around 10 Revelations / a Ruku, daily). For easy understanding, read when you are fresh. In sub-continent it is a general practice to write Commentaries / Taffsiirs in the margins / footnotes (these are human perceptions, hence need not be true always). As these Comments / Tafsirs are likely to bias the understanding (about Revelations / Ayats), hence to keep the understanding pure, avoid reading commentaries, at least for the first two rounds, thereafter, you are free to refer them if you wish to know what or how others have understood the message of Allah i.e. Quran (now your attitude towards them will be different, for, now you are looking at them from a position of strength hence will not see commentator as a teacher, but you will see him as a colleague, for Allah is sufficient as a Teacher & He only can impart WISDOM). Keep on reading Quran to understand, round after round, as it will impart more & more clarity (Moreover, it will help you in keeping away from the mistakes similar to that committed by Adam when a long period passed after Allahs warning about the forbidden tree, please check details from Quran). Ablution / wazu or similar rituals / customs play deterrent to frequent use of Quran. Please note that Quran is presented to non-Muslims also, where these rituals / customs are not expected to be followed. Hence, understanding is more important than the observation of customs, as deeds will not be profitable without faith. Therefore, just washing your hands should be enough for handling Quran. Feel free to use easy chair while reading, if it imparts conducive effect. After a couple of rounds, Insha-Allah enough clarity & confidence will make you Muslim=Obedient to Allah.
