How toxic is your toothpaste? Toothpaste is a common source of a number of chemicals which have the potential to act as endocrine disruptors. This means that they mimic hormones and can cause confusion within the body. One such chemical is Triclosan- which up until recently has been used as an anti-bacterial agent in hand sanitisers and hand wash. It has been in the spotlight recently as it has been found not to be as effective against bacteria as previously thought and it also has potentially undesirable effects upon health. I recently read an article in a popular health magazine which was talking about how triclosan and its safety and effectiveness was being reviewed. A few pages later, the same magazine was promoting a new toothpaste which had added tricolsan to reduce bacteria in the mouth- not safe or effective for use on hands, but now being used in toothpaste!? Check whether your toothpaste or any other products eg handwash, hand sanitiser contain triclosan and choose one without it it in future.
