Howdy! The Town of Firestone received noticed from the Colorado Oil and Gas Commission (COGCC) on Sept. 19, 2013 regarding a reported oil spill north of Firestone along the St. Vrain River. An Anadarko storage tank spilled 323 barrels (13,566 gallons) into floodwaters. Promptly reported by the operator, Anadarko deployed absorbent booms to collect residual oil in standing water pooled around the tanks that do not feed into the river. The Town of Firestone does not utilize any water from the St. Vrain River. The town water supply comes from the Colorado-Big Thompson (CBT), which is a federal water diversion project in Colorado that collects west slope mountain water from the headwaters of the Colorado River and diverts it to Colorado’s Front Range. The town’s water treatment facility is located at Carter Lake. The town’s water is on a closed loop system and has not been contaminated. The COGCC sent out six teams of inspectors and environmental protection specialists that are canvassing flood impacted areas around the spill at the St. Vrain River. In addition, one COGCC staff member is in the air with the Weld County Sheriff’s Department. With regard to public health concerns associated with floodwaters, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has developed an information flood resource website accessed by visiting its website at cdphe.state.co.us and then clicking on: our flood resource page. The website and its associated links provide a great deal of useful public health information to citizens affected by flood waters, or their aftermath. For more information about the COGCC, visit cogcc.state.co.us/. The town will provide updates on the situation as information becomes made available and update residents.
