Hows this for a day to forget: I was supposed to travel to Pittsburghs South Hills to umpire a Little League game for 7 p.m. I usually get to a game very early--not wanting to get caught in traffic in Pittsburghs Oakland and East End. But right at 4 p.m., an attorney who has been handling the short sale of my house in New Jersey (which has been on the market for 4 and a half years!) sends me nine documents that need to get signed, notarized and mailed express--in the next hour. I download the documents--go outside--flat tire! I wait half an hour for AAA. A service man shows up and inflates the tire. Ive got 15 minutes to drive to the bank, where theres a notary. I make it in just a few minutes--only to be told that the notary cant witness my documents, because theyre not bank statements. Its now ten minutes to 5. I dash across the street to the AAA headquarters--where theres a notary. But first I have to sign in and get registered--take a seat--number gets called. I sign the 9 documents, the notary signs them--Im ready to dash to the post office--only to be hold, Thatll be $45. I have to go to the cashier. That done, I drive madly to Staples because their postal service is open later than the US Postal Service--only to be told that Im too late for overnight. I learn theres a FedEx a few blocks away--get back in my van--drive to the FedEx--get everything settled--its in the mail. Finally, something went right! But all of this has now cost me $75. At least Ill make $45 umpiring. I start heading out to the game--get a beep on my cell phone--a message--game cancelled--the field is too muddy from this afternoons rain.
