#HudHud Vizag Update Just spoke to my in-laws in Vizag who gave - TopicsExpress

#HudHud Vizag Update Just spoke to my in-laws in Vizag who gave an update on HudHuds tectonic intensity enveloping Vizag. Whirlwinds moving at 120 kmph+ are creating scare amongst the city folks so one can understand the impact on people in low-lying areas. The entire Eastern Naval command is enlisted to support the governments initiatives to limit human casualties to near-zero. My in-laws stay exactly at the top of the RK Beach Road and they say this is the most they have experienced in a lifetime. Usually, the hill near Dolphins nose intercepts any roaring cyclone to divert and dissipate itself towards Orissa - which bears all the brunt. But this time they say the severity of the cyclone surprised everybody. Schools, colleges, Malls, multiplexes, RK Beach Road, restaurants, parks are all closed since yesterday. Power lines are switched off since yesterday 9pm onwards because electric poles are uprooted on many roads especially in Bheemli - I hope all those beautiful statues of the Pandavas near Bheemli havent given away to the gales. Highways, railways and airports are shut down. All the sensational updates shown on TV channels may be true, for a change. But the bad news is, Vizag folks cannot see them because power is off. Radio and landline phones are the only means of external communication and information. By tonite, if the intensity doesnt dissipate, mobile phones will also be dead unless you carry chargers. My in-laws say if they open the windows, the winds are shattering most walled and openly-kept objects. But thanks to the alerts, they have made arrangements for milk, food and water supplies few days in advance. Yesterday, it rained heavily too but now its only wind. Rains may re-start in a day or two once the cyclone intensity goes down and the temperature cools off. They are not venturing out of homes, even descending down the stair case since yesterday morning because you never know which tree or branch hits you at blind-range. Since yesterday eve, no vehicles were spotted on the road. The terrace is littered with tree branches and the mango tree next-door is half-uprooted to hang on my in-laws side of the house. The best strategy to tackle a cyclone is to stay indoors and avoid air contact. My father-in-law is quite an adventurous man who knows how to handle a contingency - his view is that the cyclone HudHud may be yanked out by today evening because the satellite pictures suggest the cyclone will pass Vizag after noon today. But the after-effects may take a few days for the city to recover. I asked him how the name HudHud came about. He is more updated than many others I spoke to. He said cyclones and hurricanes are usually named alternately as male and female names and the list is usually drawn from a masterlist that contains 60 names. This is easier than naming all the cyclones as #1, #122 and so on. HudHud is named after Israels national bird and the honor for naming it went to Oman. What a connection - A cyclone in AP named after a land-locked countrys national bird by a country which never sees a cyclone! I hope HudHud finally bombs like a thud. My prayers to all who are braving this now. Stay at home, listen to the radio, stay in touch. In these times, remember, discretion is the better part of valor. #HudHud #Vizag #Orissa #CycloneInVizag #OrissaCyclone #AP
