Human migratory patterns over the last 160,000 years have almost always been coastal, and it has really only been in the last 30,000 years that you have seen significant inland migration, usually arising due to the domestication of pack animals - horses, oxen and so forth. Oceanic cultures in the South Pacific, the Ainu in Japan, the First People of the Pacific Northwest and other examples persist even to this day of peoples that have adapted to life in symbiosis with the water. Is it so far fetched that humans would have over time adapted to life at shallow depths?
