Hunting ban affects NPS lands in Lehman Township BUSHKILL-Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Superintendent John J. Donahue announced October 2nd that the temporary closure of hunting and trapping seasons imposed yesterday by the Pennsylvania Game Commission includes 7067 acres of federally-owned lands within Lehman Township. The remaining approximately 60,000 acres of park lands in NJ and PA are unaffected by the temporary season closure and will remain open to all hunting seasons in accordance with federal and state laws. The Pennsylvania Game Commission indicated yesterday that Hunting and trapping seasons will remain closed in the identified townships until the executive order is lifted, which will be announced by the Game Commission in a statewide news release that will be posted on the agency’s website at the time it is issued. Under federal law (36 C.F.R. 2.2(b)(4), in areas like Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area where hunting is authorized “such activities shall be conducted in accordance with federal law and the laws of the state within whose exterior boundaries a park area or a portion thereof is located.” The NPS manages the wildlife within park boundaries, but the establishment of recreational hunting seasons is a state managed activity under the law. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has taken legal action to curtail the hunting season in the affected areas and therefore the NPS will act in accordance with the state’s legal action. For information about Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and all of its programs, services and facilities, call park headquarters at 570-426-2452 (weekdays), visit the park’s website, nps.gov/dewa,
