Most questionnaire respondents (76%) reported a slight to strong negative attitude toward wolves, whereas a minority (16%) were slightly to strongly positive, and the remainder were neutral (8%). A majority (92%) of the 24 farmers who completed questionnaires indicated they did not like wolves. During group discussions, farmers generally expressed negative attitudes, although attitudes were not uniform across groups. It seems the discussion format allowed them to explain their attitudes rather than being limited to a single-phrase questionnaire response. In the Central Forest group, there was variation with some expressing purely negative attitudes, others having a more neutral view, and still some expressing a degree of positivity. One farmer in this group stated, “I’m not as negative about wolves as I am against the management of them.” All of the positive comments were qualified by statements regarding some of the perceived problems with wolves in Wisconsin. No one from the Northeast group expressed any positive feelings about wolves, although a few agreed that they could accept a wolf population in the state if it were restricted to forest land or if farmers were allowed to control problem wolves, as they knew which individuals were problem animals.
