I LOVE teaching, its the best thing ever, but.... I Hate grading, for so many reasons: #1. In my subject area it feels so subjective, what makes good youth ministry? Why is idea A better than idea B, each person is different and will work in a different situation. #2. I dont like the idea of the teacher being the arbitrary arbiter of truth. Who is to say that one of my students isnt wiser or brighter than I am. I like engaging ideas and discussing, but Im less excited about the heavy-handed, Im right, youre wrong feel of grading. #3. In my subject area, academic skills are not the best predictor of success. It feels like that whole Einstein grading a fish on climbing, grading a monkey on flying thing. Sometimes I have to give out bad grades to awesome students who I know will thrive in the real world. Dang it, Im smart, Im going to figure out another way of assessing students, motivating them to do the work, and helping them to avoid laziness, but with less pressure and competition. Theres got to be a way.
