I REMEMBER GERTIE ALLEN FAITH Gertie and I met in 1947 when we both started to Bethel College, and this began our 67 years of close friendship. IT WASNT LONG UNTIL GERTIE STARTED DATING MARTHA JEAN SHARPE FROM LEWISBURG, TN. THEY DATED MOST OF OUR FIRST YEAR. AFTER TWO Quarters into the second year, they became engaged and both dropped out of Bethel. GERTIE SAID HE DIDNT NEED A COLLEGE EDUCATION TO BE A FARMER. HOW RIGHT HE WAS. HE WAS A VERY HARD WORKING, SMART FARMER. HE NEVER FARMED ON SUNDAY. A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN HE LEASED HIS FARM TO A FRIEND THAT MAN NEVER FARMED GERTIE’S FARM ON SUNDAY IN RESPECT FOR GERTIE. Gertie never talked a lot like his two preacher brothers, Charles and Argyle Ray, but when he did speak everybody listened because he was a wise man. He often encouraged others. He always would speak up to help others. I remember distinctly one of those times. We were at a Presbyteriial meeting when a man was falsely accusing me of possibly making a wrong decision. Gertie knew the full story, and he said that I HAD DONE THE RIGHT THING AND THE CASE WAS CLOSED. GERTIE LOVED TO GO ON MISSION WORK TRIPS TO COLOMBIA,and MOST OF THOSE TIMES WE WENT TOGETHER. ALTHOUGH HE COULDNT SPEAK SPANISH, HE STILL WAS ABLE TO MAKE FRIENDS BEING SUCH A WARM, KIND, and FRIENDLY MAN. HE COULD DO ABOUNT ANY KIND OF CONSTRUCT ION WORK AND WAS ALWAYS ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE MEN ON THE WOK TEAM. Gertie was a wonderful husband for his beloved Martha Jean. HE WAS also a good father to Bill, Kathy Eby and Celia Kay Munier. HE KNEW SO MANY STORIES MANY OF THEM COMICAL AND HE COULD ENTERTAIN YOU WITH THEM. Gertie became a Christian at age 10 and joined the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he was a member all his life. He was an elder for many years. Gertie always tried to do the right thing and to always tell the truth. He always tried to help the poor. It saddens me to have lost such a wonderful friend, but it won’t be long until I can have wonderful fellowship with Gertie again in heaven.
