I.T. guys are often overly literal. They read policy instructions and translate them directly to code, without taking into account the need for subjective interpretations. Federal and state government regulations in particular are purposely written in a vague way, to give leeway for bureaucrats to selectively enforce rules, based on unspoken factors. Its one reason government I.T. is so messed up. Translation into clear code is almost impossible. I like the more clear-cut approach of financial institutions. In fact, my peace of mind depends on it. Which leads to another point... Government I.T. personnel are on average much less happy with their jobs. I felt miserable as a contractor at federal government assignments. They ordered me to stop and go home at 5 PM, in the midst of train of thought complex code. One almost thought they didnt want the work to get done at all. I had to start working for clients in private industry for my own peace of mind. You do have to work harder. You can be fired more easily. But its much more satisfying and pays better. I have to confess there is another factor at work. I really dislike the governments Oracle software. It gives me a headache. Im a Microsoft SQL Server and SAP guy. I may be Database Dude, but not on Oracle.
