I TRAVELED TO HANOI PART 6 - Traditional Toy Figurine Tò He - Walking around the old quarter of HaNoi, especially on Hang Ma street during special occasions like Tet holiday or Mid-Autumn Festival, you can capture some treet vendors selling tiny colorful toys made from glutinous rice powder called Tò he. The toys are made in form of edible figurine such as animals, flowers or characters in folk stories. To make the figurines, the craftsman needs a mixture of glutinous colorful rice powders and bamboo sticks to plant the shaped toys. The rice paste is kneaded with fresh water before dropped in boiling water for one hour and finally dyed with food color. Using comb and fingers, skillful craftsman then shape the past into interesting shapes. Back to old days when television and comics had yet come to existence in Vietnam, children often gathered at the community house in the village, listening to stories, see the king and mandarins in their elaborate costumes made by skillful craftsmen to imagine the whole vivid world of heroes and fairies.... The rice figurines, now, though are not as popular as they were in the past, but still reflects a traditional Vietnamese custom and still enjoyed by not only Vietnamese children, but also people who cares about the very specific Vietnam custom.
