I actually turned this in for an english assignment in high school: Golden Guernsey Dairy Shuts Down. Debate Is Going On About What To Do With The Giant Cow. By Hannah Webber Golden Guernsey Dairy in Waukesha, WI, has shut down, leaving 112 citizens unemployed, but that’s not the biggest problem the city has with this facility’s closing. What the city has the biggest problem with is no longer having a use for the giant cow in the front of the factory. Ever since the company first opened in the 1920’s, it has been known for and appreciated because of its giant cow. During the great depression, Golden Guernsey tried giving away free milk to the public, but families were too proud to be given their milk. Golden Guernsey came up with an idea to help: they could fill the giant cow with milk so the men would still have to work for their milk. This was a huge success, as the men liked needing to milk the plastic teats of a giant cow to provide for their families. The cow, affectionately named “Squirts”, has gone through so much that it has become a part of the town. During the time when people would get their free milk from her, Squirts’ teats became so used that they needed to be replaced. The community started a fund for Squirts, and raised enough money to replace her worn-down teats. Now that the factory is shut down, what will they do with Squirts? Some people have suggested keeping her there. She has become a part of the town and they would hate to see her go. Others want to move her to a park and make her into a slide for a playground so she can keep pleasing the town. No matter of the cow’s fate, the town is planning on cutting off the cow’s teats and putting them into the Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum, since these are the teats that helped our town survive. A final decision on what to do with the rest of the giant cow will be decided on February 1, 2013. #waukeshanorth
