I admit I’ve never been in the huddle after a football game, so I can’t say for sure what usually happens there. But tonight our coach invited the community to gather around the players under the goal post and listen to what they call “Put-ups,” I hoped with all my heart that the same scene was being replayed under Friday Night Lights all over the country. The boys spoke up around the circle with compliments and thanks, things like an upperclassman telling the younger defensive players that they “really stepped it up,” a pat on the back to the player who fumbled for pulling himself together and getting back in the game, a shout out to one of the coaches for his help, applause for a beautiful catch, appreciation to a teammate for helping clarify a play. It almost made up for having to hold my breath until Devin got up every time he was down. When the boys were finished, Coach invited everyone to put their hands in for a cheer (“let’s make it quick, you guys smell). What did we yell on three? Family!
