I am a nurse and 15 or so years ago while working in a hospital, I had the pleasure of taking care of a little lady, well into her eighties. The first time that I met her she asked me what tribe I was. I told her that I was Creek and she told me that she was Creek too. We visited some and she asked me if I could speak Creek. I told her I knew a few words but no, I couldnt speak it. She then asked me if I would like to learn a word. I said yes, and she said istahogagee. She explained that it was our word for doll, but said it meant its like a little person. For the next three days, whenever I entered her room she asked me to say the word, I knew that istagee meant baby, and while I didnt know what the hog meant, with her explanation, it made sense to me. She didnt try to teach me any other words and I said that one alot in those three days. When I came to work the fourth day she had gone home. I dont recall her name and I dont know why she chose to teach me that particular word, but Ive never forgotten it or the the way that she included me when she said our word.
