I am back from St Petersburg where I addressed the Promsvyazbank conference, just as the Empire was announcing its sanctions. My basic point was that the break with the West is probably definitive, quite possibly premature, and very certainly a vital step for Russia. To replace the accustomed financial machinery is a challenge, yes, but it is also a great opportunity. Asia is rising, the Empire is in decline. Old habits die hard. Russia must look to the future, not the past. The necessary trade flows and credit are available, but not in the accoustomed places. Think China, but also Japan/Korea. It is not easy - I do not have all the answers - no one does. But what I do know is that if Russia wishes to have an independent foreign policy and assume her rightful place in the world, she must free herself from the threat of American economic blackmail. Smashing the Nazi blockade of St Petersburg was not easy either - but it was vitally necessary.
