I am completely furious right now. I was told I could not pick my child up from school due to safety issues due to weather. I want to keep my child safe more than the school district does, I promise, but never under any circumstance should a government agency be keeping me separated from my child, barring one of us being arrested. The end result- I did leave with my child. And have obviously pissed off some school officials. As a parent, it is for me to decide where my child will be safest. And this lockdown apparently allows 50 parents to mill around the foyer, students to be dashing through halls, and officials to be acting very important with their walkie talkies but its too dangerous for my child to come to me? I dont think so. I love the people that work at schools. Most of them are kind, loving folks who want to help kids. But policies that imply and enforce that government knows what is better for our kids than parents are evil and they are designed to undermine parental rights. It starts slowly, like getting you accustomed to being told no, you may not have access to your child, for their own good. And I shudder to think where it ends. Not while I have a breath left will anyone tell me when and where I can see my kids and when and where I will take them when we leave school grounds. And if I am overreacting, well where my kids are concerned is where I will not back down.
